The Hap Hap Happiest Holiday Extravaganza Since Bing Crosby Tap Danced With Danny F%*king Kaye”
By Todd Walburn
Don’t be misled by the quirky poster, the strange (bleeping) name or the promise of “Dreg Nog”. The Dreg Spot’s next show “The Hap Hap Happiest Holiday Extravaganza Since Bing Crosby Tap Danced With Danny F%*king Kaye” is no joke. One of Second April’s oldest and most unique tenants, is continuing his tradition of thinking outside the box. This time the box just happens to be a Christmas present…..and you are the recipient.
Craig Booth, the Dreg Spot’s proprietor and his equally talented and imaginative other half, Vanessa Booth, have once again cleared space in the gallery for an invitational group show celebrating any or all of the December holidays in the artist’s choice of medium. It’s a creative free-for-all from artists of all experience levels, merging their talents with their imaginations in what is certain to be different from your traditional holiday art show.
The Dreg Spot has always been Second April’s home for “Outsider Art”, art created outside of the established art scene. With that safe place to nest, many artists have found a home on the gallery’s walls during these regular invitational exhibits. While ordinarily the gallery is filled with the mixed media pop art style of Craig and the always innovative and imaginative creations of Vanessa, when the mood and an idea strikes, the gallery is transformed into a colorful collage of subjects, styles and media (usually around an equally imaginative theme). Their first group show, art inspired by the movie The Big Lebowski, was a huge hit, followed the next year by an ’80’s and then a ’70’s themed show.
There is no end to the variety of work represented in this show. From traditional paintings on canvas to t-shirts, ornaments and beyond there is literally something for any taste and gift items for any budget. It’s fun, irreverent, colorful and festive….exactly what you expect from the minds of artists who have been given the freedom to create in an environment that encourages all kinds of artistic expression. And of course your favorite work by Craig and Vanessa will be there as well throughout the season. Make a point to make The Dreg Spot a stop on your shopping adventure this year. There are plenty of opportunities starting with the opening on Thursday, November 5th from 5pm to 8pm followed by First Friday on November 6th. And of course The Dreg Spot is also open the same hours as Second April Galerie from 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturday. There is plenty to keep you in the holiday spirit all season long!
