Junie B. Jones The Musical at the Players Guild Theatre
By James Dennison
An excellent new children’s musical is currently running at the Players Guild Theater located inside in the Cultural Center for the Arts on Market Ave North in Canton. Junie B. Jones; The Musical is an adaption of children’s book series written by Barbara Park. Barbara published 33 different Junie B. Jones books in a span of 20 years beginning in 1993 and ending in 2013 with the passing of Barbara Park. The musical is the 9th theater production spawned from the Junie B. Jones series of books. The musical adaption was written by Marcy Heisler with music by Zina Goldrich and is sure to entertain children and adults alike.
The play begins on the first day of First Grade and stars Junie as well as her friends, foes, teachers and parents. Junie is a saucy youngster with big glasses and a big smile. She’s not afraid to speak her mind in spite of her weaknesses of bad spelling and poor grammar. The irrepressible Junie B. Jones frequently spouts her spunky catch phrases like “Wowie Wow Wow,” and “Yeah, only,” and fills the stage with her kooky quirks like her fear of clowns, ponies, and roosters. This delightful performance is sure to have the kid in you howling for more.
The Players Guild Theatre which is producing the show has been a Canton tradition since 1932, originally located inside Lincoln High School and has moved three times before settling inside the beautiful Cultural Center for the Arts. The Players Guild Theater is one of the oldest continually operating volunteer-based theater in the nation.
